Hemulen was originally a stamp collector, but he became frustrated when his stamp collection became complete and switched his interest to botany. Hemulen carries a magnifying glass (which he has had since he was a stamp collector). When he switched to botany, he also acquired a porter bag in which he keeps his plants when he is out looking.
