The diplomat and ambassador Harald Edelstam (1913-1989) is best known for having saved the lives of a large number of people during and after Augusto Pinochet's military coup in Chile in 1973. Edelstam is also known for having saved the lives of around a hundred Norwegian jews during the later part of the Second World War in Nazi-occupied Norway where he was stationed. He distinguished himself as a diplomat through his competence, courage and civil courage in the fight and defense of human rights
